The Department of Biological Science and Technology was established in 1994. Starting out as a master's program, it became the first biotechnology-related department in Chiao Tung University. Currently, the College of Biological Science and Technology comprises the Department of Biological Science and Technology, the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Bioengineering, and the Institute of Bioinformatics and System Biology.
The biotechnology industry is a star industry in the 21st century. Many major technology countries around the world are relying on government leadership to assist with the development of the country's biotechnology industry and the cultivation of biotechnology talents. In the past two decades, Taiwan has also attached great importance to the promotion of biotechnology and the cultivation of talents. From the Eight Major Technology Development Focus in Taiwan in 1990 and the Two Trillion and Twin Star Development Program in 1996 to the present, many national biotechnology parks have been established across the country. In addition to investing huge amounts of funds each year, the government is encouraging universities and colleges to participate in the cultivation of a new generation of biotechnology R&D talents.
In view of this, as early as the beginning of the 1990s, National Chiao Tung University has set biotechnology as the key direction of the school’s future development. It integrated its excellent foundations in the development of relevant fields such as electronics, information, and science and technology to implement an interdisciplinary biotechnology talent training program. The training program fully integrated the science and research in biology and engineering to achieve the goal of making Chiao Tung University into a top international university with first-class teaching and research outcomes.

In 2001, Chiao Tung University established the nation’s first Institute of Bioinformatics and recruited outstanding students from the two major fields of biotechnology (biology) and information.
The research domains of the Institute included diverse and complex subjects such as genetic bioinformatics, structural bioinformatics, molecular simulation, database structure and design, bioinformatics algorithms, structural biology, molecular and cellular biology, genetics, molecular evolution, and genomics. Students were required to have interdisciplinary learning ability in order to solve problems encountered in their research.
Equal emphasis on teaching and research has always been the core spirit of the NCTU College of Biological Science and Technology. Adhering to the same philosophy, our Institute combines foundation and practice to build a solid educational base. The Institute actively collaborates with major hospitals and research institutions in Taiwan to study clinical data and cultivate both theory and application in top bioinformatics and systems biology talents.

In response to changes in knowledge in the 21st century and the challenges of sustainable globalization, Chiao Tung University hopes to balance foundation and practice in the field of science. It emphasizes interdisciplinary research in basic science, molecular medicine and bioengineering with a view towards creating top biotechnology industry development in the future. In addition, with the completion of the interpretation of the human genome, basic biomedical research and biotechnology industries have entered the post-genome era and are moving towards the trend of basic molecular medical research and bioengineering applications, thus fulfilling the opportunities that the Institute hoped to achieve when it was established.
The main direction of development is to explore the physiology and pathological mechanism of cells and microorganisms at the molecular level and collaborate with the development of biological nanomaterials to develop related applications. The scope of research includes microorganisms and cells, pathogenic mechanisms, biological sensing and diagnosis, and biological nanomaterials. Based on the foundation and results of existing research in cells and microorganisms, the Institute hopes to continue to deepen basic research and develop nanomaterial applications in molecular medicine.

Industrial Development Graduate Program of CBT

The goal of this doctoral program is to cultivate doctoral talents with a forward-looking vision in biotechnology industry, and the ability to develop innovative technologies needed by the industry and develop biotechnology products. The core of development is "precision biomedical research and innovation platform and interdisciplinary industry-academia integration" that can subsequently provide clinical and industrial application solutions that are based on academic research. The College seeks to integrate its faculty and interdisciplinary expertise, cooperate with NCTU’s strong research and development capabilities in information and communication technology semiconductors, and lead Taiwan’s biotechnology industry into innovative industrial technology, thereby facilitating industrial upgrading and establishing a model of symbiosis between the domestic biotechnology industry and academia.

由於生醫工程所涵蓋範圍有生醫電子、生醫光電、生醫資訊、生醫影像、生醫材料、生醫力學,以及基礎與臨床醫學工程等主要領域,其涉獵甚廣。我們在評估和分析本校在生醫工程發展的現況與未來所欲達成的目標,選定「生醫器材」、「生醫資訊」、「生醫材料」及「生醫科學」等四個前瞻課題,以及其互為相關之主題(如雲端照護、生醫感測及藥物開發),為我們在生醫工程發展之主軸,而所有之教學規劃、研究團隊組成及人才之延攬,也以此原則進行之。
